Contemporary Moral Problem: The Debate over Utilitarianism

Page history last edited by Lex Eugene Peregrino 15 years, 1 month ago

Review question:

Rachels says that classical utilitarianism can be summed up in three propositions. What are they?

The Three propositions are:

Justice which responsible in any action that you commit it is the last decision whether the act is wrong or right.

Rights these are the act of the people that corresponds to different fields the human rights and the civil rights as a example

Retrospective rationale these are the concept of people who look back in their personal explanation in life.

Explain the problem with hedonism. How do defenders of utilitarianism respond to this problem?

Hedonism is the pleasure or happiness for a person. This is for her/his interest only without the majority decision this is for a single person decision. Utilitarianism this is a nice approach because this is for all and for massive decision or rule of all people that is stipulated.

What are the objections about justice, rights and promises?

The difference between these three objections is the decision that we make because in justice we need to approach the people or share to them the right justice that we make. Right is the ethical prerogative of the person that is distributed with balance. Last is promise the agreement within the group or a person.

Distinguish between rule- and act- utilitarianism. How does rule- utilitarianism reply to the objections?

Act Utilitarianism is a decision where in the person is not fair or it ends with a false witness against guiltless person who is in the act this is a result of a good meticulous act. While the rule utilitarianism is the vise versa of act utilitarianism because this would fall in the right decision and the guiltless person is get a fair decision.

What is the third line of defense?

This is like a defense which this are the usual sense compose of discrimination absorbed from our parents, our religion and the general culture.
